I am handicapped from a car wreck and
in pain 24 hours day, so I need to cut corners every
place I can to stay organized.
First of all we eat a lot of soup!
It’s always healthier than a "grumpy meal" (my
husband's coined term for fast food children's
meals) and fairly simple for a child to make for
themselves. They feel so grown up helping mommy make
dinner!
Start with making meal time
fixin's reachable for age appropriate children.
Bread, sandwich filling and salad ingredients should
be easily gotten without worry of spilling something
or being wounded by that 3-lb. jar of peanut butter
falling on the toes.
In fact you may consider packaging
'giant family sized' items into smaller containers.
This helps your fridge be more organized and less
injury prone.
I try to avoid round shaped
storage containers as they take up more space and
don’t seem to stack as well.
I also like to use masking tape
and a pen tape to label what is in a container that
is not see-through.
It may be beneficial to store the
same items in the same containers each time to avoid
confusion.
Meals should be able to be
prepared with a butter knife or other safe tools
that are also with in reach.
A pre-made chart with what
sandwich building ingredients or small easy recipes
that go with your favorite soups/salads will take
the guess work out of preparation as well as help
you avoid many "mom what about...?" type questions.
You might also have a list of
whose turn it is to help set the table, wash the
lettuce, load dishwasher, etc…
These guidelines can help husbands
too.
Never be ashamed to serve soup,
sandwiches and salad! It's just as healthy as it is
quick!
