Mathematics 500

materials : poster board, markers, index cards, matchbox or hot wheel cars, if desired -linking cubes, buttons, or number line (some manipulative to aid your child in working out problems)

skills : math facts, recognition of when to use specific math operations, counting

Preparation : Draw a very large oval on the poster board. Next draw a smaller concentric oval within the first shape. Finally, draw lines in the space between both ovals; these will be the game board spaces. If you desire, color the interior of each square. Choose one square to be the 'starting line' and the one behind it is the 'finish line' (you could draw a checkered flag here)

Prepare a set of index cards containing whatever math operations your child is currently working with. You could write word problems if your child needs practice identifying when to use specific operations, or addition/subtraction/multiplication/division problems. Vary how the problems are written, linear or in column format, if you child is developing the skill to work with both forms. If you are playing this game with more than one child, make a second set of index cards with math problems appropriate to their level. (I buy colored index cards in bulk, and use one colored card for each child)

To Play : Shuffle the index cards thoroughly. Each player takes turns selecting a card. If they are able to solve the problem correctly, the player moves their race car the same number of squares as the answer to the math problem. For example, if a player selects a card with the problem 17-4=? , they would move 13 spaces around the track. If the player is unable to answer the question, they stay put and the next person takes a turn.

The Object : Each player's car must complete the circuit from start to finish line.
