Counting Down the New Year

by Catie Gosselin of WomanLinks.com

materials : 11 index cards, yarn, hole punch, markers, stickers, whistles, noise makers, pot lids, shakers (anything to make some noise!)

skills : basic counting, number identification, fine motor

Number ten index cards 1 to 10 (one number per card). Depending upon your child's age, they can write the number themselves, or trace the number written in pencil. Have them put the appropriate number of stickers on each card; ten stickers on the card carrying the number 10, for example. Write 'Happy New Year' on the last card. Have your child decorate this in any manner they wish. Using the whole punch, create a hole on the top of each card. Have your child lace a piece of yarn through each hole, joining all the cards. Tie off the yarn, making sure there is enough slack to easily flip the cards during the countdown.

'Count down' to the New Year with your youngster, being sure to make lots of noise to welcome in 2001 (or 02, 03, etc.)!
