Who, What, Why, Where, When
and How Gameskills:
imagination, creativity, creative writing,
storytelling materials: paper and pencil, chalkboard
On a piece of paper, or
chalkboard, write on separate lines, the words
'who', 'what', 'why', 'where', 'when' and 'how'.
Explain to your child that you are going to build a
story together. The story can be about anything but
before starting, you need him/her to answer a few
questions. Ask who is the story about and write
their response next to the word 'who'. Repeat the
process after asking what this person does, why they
do it, where it happens, when it happens and how
this person does what he/she does. Once all the
questions have been completed, review the answers.
Now encourage your child to use
this information to create a story. Allow them to
write it, draw it, record the story on a tape
player, or perform it. However they want to present
the story is fine. Encourage improvisation should
they develop ideas beyond the original focus.
