Materials:
small clear glass
cotton balls
small rectangle of black
construction paper
seeds, water
Fill the glass
with cotton balls. Place the
construction paper inside the glass,
surrounding the cotton balls. Insert
two or three seeds (beans, peas and
squash work well) between the glass
and construction paper.
The items are now
layered from outside in; glass,
seeds, construction paper and then
cotton balls. Pour water directly
onto cotton. This moisture wicks
through the construction paper and
to the seeds.
Depending upon the
seed type, you will see roots and a
stem shoot out. Using a clear glass
enables the kids to see the full
development of a root system and
gives them a good idea of what
happens under the ground. You may
want to plant a variety of seeds to
compare root systems too. |
