| Skills : basic
geometry, problem solving,
creativity
Materials :
butcher's paper (36 inches long),
assorted fabric scraps cut into
squares and rectangles of various
sizes, paintbrushes, white glue,
yardstick, pencil
Using the
yardstick and pencil, divide the
sheet of butcher's paper into
rectangles. (We used a 3 x 2 matrix
on our paper). Draw a small
rectangle within each square so that
your children can write their names
as well something for which they are
grateful this year. (You may also
wish to write the year in one of the
'quilt' squares to keep this project
as a memento)
Give your kids the
pile of fabric squares and
rectangles, and working one square
on the paper at a time, have them
choose which patterns and which
shapes to use to completely fill the
area. Once the layout is determined,
then use paintbrushes to spread a
thin layer of white glue within the
square, and secure the fabric in
place. Repeat this process until
each square is filled, and your
quilt is complete.
Depending upon
your child's age, this project may
be spread over a few days. It is not
necessary to do it all in one
sitting. |
